‘Chennai Express is a Hindi movie directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Gauri Khan, Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur. The movie stars Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. Backed by heavy promotions, the movie was released on 8thAugust.
‘Chennai Express’ is a complete family entertainment movie with elements of romance, action and comedy intricately embedded in it. Since, it is Rohit Shetty movie, action is far more exaggerated. But if you decide to let yourself free with a tub of popcorns and a bottle of cold drink, you will glide with the flow of the movie and the light hearted comedy will help you relax.
‘Chennai Express’ is Rohit Shetty’s version of ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’. A 40 year old Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) is seen with the same passion of love and romance. He brings the nostalgia of ‘DDLJ’. The movie begins as Rahul boards a train called ‘Chennai Express’ from Mumbai. Rahul has to go from Mumbai to Rameshwaram. He is carrying the ashes of his dadaji who wanted them to be immersed in Rameshwaram. On the train, he meets south Indian beauty, Minnama (Deepika Padukone). She has ran away from her home as her father wanted her to get married to someone she disliked. Her father is a local don. Rahul falls for Minamma. They both come to stay in a village in south India. As they both plan to abscond, Minamma’s father creates problems for them. It is not a cake walk to fall for the daughter of a don. What follows is a series of action sequences with blowing up cars and jeeps and lots of over the top action and drama.
Shahrukh is phenomenal. In the first half of the movie, the conversations between Deepika and Shahrukh are quite entertaining and humorous. Shahrukh brings ‘Rahul’ of ‘DDLJ’ in him, a loving and charming man. At few places his acting is little exaggerated, but that is ‘King Khan Ishtyle’. Deepika not only looked gorgeous, her acting is powerful. Both strike a good chemistry together.Overall, the movie is entertaining, colorful, and romantic. The songs exude energy and are fresh. Rohit Shetty has maintained his style of balancing action and comedy. Film critic Taran Adarsh says, “CHENNAI EXPRESS is *not* path-breaking at all. Nor does it cater to those who scoff at potboilers. Rohit has always claimed that he's still that common man watching movies at a singleplex, so his movies, consequently, cater to those with an appetite for masalathons. CHENNAI EXPRESS lives up to the Himalayan expectations that you have from the project. It's an entertainer that proves that the SRK - Rohit Shetty combo is truly magical. In fact, it's one of the best combos to hit the masala film space.”
