Bombay to Bangkok - Movie Review

The script of Bombay to Bangkok is unsatisfactory and the screenplay is patchy. Hence Bombay to Bangkok comes across as a below average film. Although Nagesh Kukunoor's execution is average, his trademark wit and humour is missing, instead one gets in your face comic commercial gigs that are far from appealing. The film is a romantic comedy and revolves around a romance between an Indian chef and a Thai girl, the complications in their love story arise as neither of them knows the others language. In between there is a stolen booty and a don trying to recover his loot. Though several scenes are executed with ease, overall the film does not work due to a screenplay which tries too hard to be commercial. A disappointing fare from a director with high expectations.

Bombay to Bangkok has been produced under Ghai's Mukta Arts and has been written and directed by Nagesh Kukunoor. The film stars Shreyas Talpade as Shankar, Linda Christianson as Jasmine etc. The music has been composed by Salim-Sulaiman etc.

Shankar is an Indian cook who is in desperate need of money. In desperation he steals money from a local don and is on the run. He decides to head out of the country and at the airport he masquerades as part of a Thai medical team of doctors. He immediately joins them, however Shankar land himself in more trouble when he loses the bag of money. Now to add to his woes he is being chased by the local don's son and his henchmen.

On reaching Thailand, he is bumbling around when he bumps into Jasmine, a Thai girl who is a masseur. He seems smitten with Jasmine but can't tell her as neither of them speaks each others language. However as luck has it, Jasmine lands up coming to meet him the next day as she is in desperate need of a doctor. She too then gets drawn into Shankar's adventures and both of them embark on an interesting journey.

Kukunoor's script is a tad disappointing as it seems to have a thin foundation, a romance between two people of different nationalities. The rest of the ingredients seem to be merely added on for effect. Meanwhile the screenplay has some genuinely funny and sweet scenes between the couple, but many of the comic gags have been done to death. The climax is predictable. But the romance between the couple does not work as they seem to lack the right dose of chemistry. Kukunoor tries to make his characters interesting, that of a chef, a massage girl etc but he does not elaborate on it, instead he goes the clichéd way.

The music in the film does not manage to engage as it is not of the catchy variety. The cinematography is just average and the dialogues are fare but not engaging. The story seems to be running around in circles and could do with some editing. Shreyas Talpade delivers an adequate performance, but seems to lack the star power to draw crowds. Linda is fare in her performance. The rest of the cast is not up to the mark and several seem to go over the top with their performance.

On the whole, Nagesh's return to the comic genre is marred by his thin and weak script. The screenplay too does not manage to camouflage the defects. Bombay to Bangkok is below average and disappointing from an esteemed director like Kukunoor.
