7 Khoon Maaf

Vishal Bharadwaj is an incredible story teller. His films are always awaited with bated breathe as it happens to be away from the track and gives a refreshing experience. He has created a benchmark with ‘Makdee’, Omkara’ ‘Kaminey’. ‘7 Khoon Maaf’ based on the short story of Ruskin Bond’s ‘Susanna’s seven husbands’ is a deadly stuff, very dark and at the same time very scintillating.

Vishal knows how to extract the best from his actors and he has applied his technique with Priyanka Chopra also who plays Susanna, the main protagonist. Susanna is a lady of deadly nature. She hunts for love and walked the aisle with seven men but poor Susanna fail to find the true love in anyone of them. Her way of partying ways from her seven husbands is very fatal. She kills them instead of seeking a divorce.

Susanna is a killer who went on killing not one or two but seven men who came to her life. She was projected in an altogether different way. She is more of a psycho than a normal lady.

Her name was registered in the police record but somehow she escapes from the police.  The story was shown in the flashback narrated by Arun (Vivaan Shah) to Konkana Sen Sharma.

Her seven husbands are Major Edwin Rodriques (Neil Nitin Mukesh), singer Jimmy Stetson (John Abraham), poet Wasiullah Khan (Irrfan Khan), Moscow resident Nicolai Vronsky (Aleksandr Dyachenko), police officer Keemat Lal (Anu Kapoor), Doctor Modhusudhon Tarafdar (Naseeruddin Shah) and one more (who can't be revealed as it would be spoiler). In each of them, Susanna finds lacking love in someway or the other and went on killing one after them. She craves for love but fails to get from any of her seven husbands.

Susanna’s first husband is Major Edwin [Neil Nitin Mukesh] is over possessive and suspicious. His very nature does not go well with Susanna and she kills him. After his demise, Susanna marries Jimmy [John Abraham] as she is smitten by his musical talent. Jimmy becomes successful but he dies of drug overdose.

Then enter Wasiullah aka Musafir [Irrfan Khan] in her life. Impressed by his poetry, Susanna marries him but discovers that he's a romantic in daylight and a monster at night. He too washed him from her life. Susanna falls for the suave Nicolai [Aleksandr Dyachenko] from Moscow, but this marriage was also short lived as Susanna discovers that Vronsky has a wife in Russia.

Police officer Keemat Lal [Annu Kapoor] enters Susanna's life. Initially, he asks for sexual favors and later forced her to marry him. He dies due to cardiac arrest. After the death of Keemat Lal, Susanna marries Dr. Modhusudon [Naseeruddin Shah]. Depressed Susanna was put mushroom diet only. She murders him too.

Susanna finally marries the man who knows she has committed the murders and sins. What happens next to Susanna forms the story.

The music of ‘7 Khoon Maaf’ is addictive and ear-soothing. The film excels in direction, cinematography, screenplay and editing.

Speaking about performances, Priyanka Chopra showed her acting prowess. She was totally into the character and the situation and delivers her best. She was a treat to watch. Among her sever husbands, Irfan Khan, Annu Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah rocks. John and Neil were equally convincing.

In the nutshell, ‘7 Khoon Maaf ‘ is an interesting watch but the movie does not have an mass appeal. It is a critic centric film. Box office won’t get a good return with such type of film but is a good watch.
