Khalid Mohammed follows up his directorial debut Fiza with the emotional family drama Tehzeeb, which features Urmila in the title role, alongside an impressive line-up of stars (Shabana Azmi, Diya Mirza, Arjun Rampal, Diana Hayden and Rishi Kapoor). It's been a fantastic year for Bollywood's acclaimed actress Urmila Matondkar. Her performance in this year's hit Bhoot has been labeled one of the best in her career. She also has stellar roles in the movies Pinjar, Ek Hasina Thi and Tehzeeb. Despite the industry being inundated with female newcomers, here is one established actress whose career continues to progress after each film.
The dramatic story focuses on a middle-aged couple and their daughters. Rukshana (Shabana Azmi) is a strong woman who has achieved success through her career as a singer. Her husband (Rishi Kapoor) is more passive and tends to live in her shadow. They have two beautiful daughters. The youngest Nazneen (Diya Mirza) is mentally challenged. Although she is twenty years old, she has the mind of a six-year-old girl. The eldest daughter Tehzeeb (Urmila Matondkar) has a very strong personality like her mother but the two often clash, which leads to tension within the household. The relationship between mother and daughter deteriorates further following the unexpected death of Rukshana's husband. Tehzeeb feels her mother might have been instrumental in the death of her father. She initially tries to hide her feeling for the sake of her sister, but unable to bare the unresolved questions and issues, Tehzeeb eventually confronts her mother. There can only be two outcomes - the two women eventually put aside their differences and learn to live together or the mother and daughter bond is broken forever and they are separated. Whilst Arjun Rampal is paired opposite Urmila Matondkar, the film also features the first Bollywood appearance by beauty queen Diana Hayden who plays a New York publisher attracted to Arjun Rampal's character.
Tehzeeb promises to feature strong performances from the lead cast, some classy direction from Khalid Mohammed and of course a soundtrack by A. R. Rahman that is reportedly one of his best pieces of work yet! He has composed tunes on ghazals penned by two Urdu classical poets - Momin and Daagh Dehlvi as well as modern poetry by Javed Akhtar. Its no wonder Fox has quickly snapped up the distribution rights to the film. Tehzeeb releases globally on 21st November 2003.
