KHAKEE (2003)
Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan,
Aishwarya Rai, Tusshar Kapoor, Jaya Pradha and Tanuja
Director: Rajkumar Santoshi
Music: Ram Sampat
Raj Kumar Santoshi has established himself as one of Bollywood's most acclaimed directors. Although the director has not always struck gold at the box office, his films are associated with quality and therefore attract a decent level of hype before their release. His latest big budget movie Khakee isn't an exception to this rule. The star cast alone is worthy of attention, featuring the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Aishwarya Rai, Ajay Devgan, Tusshar Kapoor, Tanuja and Jaya Pradha.
The story of Khakee revolves around the Indian police force, who are must deal with the transfer of a terrorist from Chandanghad to Mumbai. The ruthless villain (named Iqbal Ansari) has many powerful contacts and the routine mission fails when the first escort team are ambushed during the journey. Fortunately Iqbal Ansari's bid for freedom misfires thanks to the work of a brave officer and the mission is rescheduled with another team.
DCP Anant Shrivastav (also known as 'The Professor') is handed the crucial assignment. Although hard working, he's never managed to reach his potential and this mission provides an opportunity for Anant to prove himself. Also on the team are Inspector Shekhar Sachdev and Inspector Ashwin Gupte, who will accompany Anant on the journey. Shekhar is a rather unethical and corrupt man who is forced to take part in the mission despite thinking it will once again fail. Meanwhile it's the first big assignment for youngster Ashwin, an inexperienced lad with heaps of motivation and good intentions but an idealistic approach. He's about to learn the difference between training school and the real world of fighting crime. The three officers are accompanies by two constables. The team must learn to work together as their mission begins and the same ferocious people who stopped the first team return to complete their unfinished business and free Iqbal Ansari.
Khakee is releasing around the Eid period (end of November 2003) and its hype alone should ensure a great opening at the box office. However it faces some stiff competition. Shah Rukh Khan's latest movie Kal Ho Naa Ho is also scheduled to release on the same date, which may prove a dilemma for the cinema viewer. Hopefully if both films meet expectations, then box office glory is potentially available to Khakee as well as Kal Ho Naa Ho.
SCHEDULED RELEASE DATE: 28th November 2003
