Eklavya has been produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and has been stalled for quite some time. The film stars quite a few big names like Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Jackie Shroff, Vidya Balan, Raima Sen, Boman Irani, Jimmy Shergill and Sharmila Tagore. The film has been shot in Rajasthan and the music has been composed by Shantanu Moitra. The film is set to release sometime in February 2007.
Eklavya revolves around the story of an ancient dynasty, an old fort, a kingdom in Rajasthan in the contemporary times of India. Eklavya (Amitabh Bachchan) is an old royal guard who lives in a time and land that has passed by, but he still continues to hold his position of royal guard very dear to him. His main aim is to protect the king, the fort, the dynasty and its secrets from those who are a threat to these. Eklavya has a history with royalty, for nine generations his family has been serving royalty and protecting them and their secrets. Eklavya has served in the fort of Devigarh in Rajasthan. His unflinching loyalty, his brilliant marksmanship and his tremendous bravery have become a legend in the kingdom. But now Eklavya has grown old with time and life is taking its course on him, and his sharp eyesight is gradually dwindling.
Prince Harshwardhan (Saif Ali Khan) is the heir to the throne of the kingdom in Rajasthan but due to all the pressures of a conservative kingdom he has moved to London where he resides. But unfortunately the demise of queen Suhasinidevi (Sharmila Tagore) forces him to return to his forgotten kingdom. There is a ray of hope and happiness in the kingdom with news of the Prince’s return to his homeland. Prince Harshwardhan has a twin sister Princess Nandini (Raima Sen) who is mentally challenged and then there is also his childhood sweetheart Rajjo (Vidya Balan) who are extremely happy with his return. But not everyone is happy about his return and a lot has changed in this kingdom.
The king Rana Jaywardhan (Boman Irani) is being influenced by his atrocious brother Jyotiwardhan (Jackie Shroff) and is ruling his people with a fierce and ruthless nature. Farmer’s lands are being snatched away from them on some pretext or the other, simple peasants are being ill treated and the subjects are dejected with the king’s rule. There is great discontent and upheaval in the kingdom. To add to all the confusion the King receives a death threat. Officer Pannalal Chohar (Sanjay Dutt) enters the scene to investigate who is out to kill the king. But the question remains as to whether he will be able find out who is threatening the king before it’s too late.
One by one several secrets and skeletons in the closet of the kingdom come to light and more chaos and confusion takes place. The film is an action thriller with loads of drama and suspense. With such an ensemble cast, there are no doubt high expectations from the film. |
